Mudge pledges N$100,000

SWAPO Party Birthday Bash netted in nearly N$1 Million for the ruling Party, making it one of the biggest donation events ever made so far, apart from election donations and contributions.

A surprise card was architect and property developer, Rynand Mudge, who pledged N$100,000 in cash. It was the biggest donation of the day, followed only by Namibia Wildlife Resort, NWR, which donated N$65 000.

By Thursday, SWAPO Party had N$610 000 in its coffers, with more cash from pledges still flowing in. Officials from the departments of Finance and Administration met on Thursday night to evaluate and put together the donations in cash and in kind.

“This has been an overwhelming success,” said one official in the Department of Administration. “We are overwhelmed by the generosity and kind contributions the people have made so far.”

The Gala Diner saw hard to find personalities meeting together at tables, business tycoons and high profile politicians mixing with ordinary members of the mighty SWAPO Party.

President Hifikepunye Pohamba and Founding President Sam Nujoma led the guests in donations. President Pohamba pledged N$10 000 spread over ten months, while Dr Nujoma pledged N$9000 and an ox.

There were more than 50 tables and each went for N$10 000, which already netted in N$500,000. There were over 500 guests and President Pohamba told the guests, mainly made up of business people, that it was because of the SWAPO Party that their businesses were thriving in a peaceful and stable environment.

“SWAPO Party brought peace,” he said. “We are a stable country because of the SWAPO Party. I ask you, what is your contribution to the Party that has brought peace and stability in this country where your businesses thrive?”

Party officials were still receiving cash by Thursday, which they estimated to reach at least one million.
