Your Excellency, SPYL took a conscious decision in early
2004 that our Founding President H.E. Dr. Sam Nujoma
must be defended and honoured by this and succeeding generations
of Namibians. It is a decision borne out of the realization
that you are a symbol of national unity, sovereignty
and national independence. The 12 May Movement is therefore
a practical indication to the Founding President that your
tireless sacrifices, that your humility, that your heroism and
bravery, that your 15 years as the first President of a free
and independent Namibia, that your Vision 2030, that your
life, remain the pinnacle of hope and the light for Namibians
present and those yet to be born. The 12 May Movement
will outlive all of us. It is a dynamic journey to posterity.
The 12 May Movement also takes cognizance and honour
of the sacrifices made by other leaders such as H.E. Dr.
President Hifikepunye Pohamba, Cde. AndimbaToivo ya
Toivo, Cde. Simon Mzee Kaukungwa, Cde Kanana
Hishoono, Cde Ben Amadhila, Cde Vinea Ndadi, the Late
Cde. Moses //Garoeb, the Late Cde. Brendan Simbwaye,
the Late Cde John Pandeni, the Late Cde John Nankudhu,
the Late Cde Peter Sheehama Tshirumbu, Cde Nahas Angula,
Cde Dr. Hage Geingob, Cde Marco Hausiku, Cde Jerry
Ekandjo, the Late Cde. Jakko Kangayi, Cde Pendukeni Iivula-
Ithana, the Late Cde Axel Johannes, the Late Cde Ambrosius
Haingura and many others.
On this day, we remember and honour your patriotic work,
your humility to leave Office and live like an ordinary leader,
yet you are an extra-ordinary leader. Comrade Founding
President you said and I quote: "When the history of an
independent Namibia is written one day, SWAPO will
go down as having stood firm where others wavered;
that it sacrificed for the sacred cause of independence,
where others compromised."
This history of an independent Namibia started on 21st
March 1990 and it is 24 years old. Therefore, we are assembled
here in the capital city of a free Namibia today to
acknowledge your role in it; to appreciate your vision and
celebrate your legacy which has brought freedom and independence
to Namibia and its people. You have led the
liberation struggle to its logical conclusion with a majestic
sense of purpose.
That is why the SWAPO Party Youth League curved
out of its existence a Day that gives meaning to our salutation
and appreciation of you; a day devoted to celebrating
your heroism, dedication and patriotic commitment; a day
which devotes an opportunity to learn from you, our fountain
of wisdom and knowledge; in the words of the young
people born after independence commonly referred to as
They will say it is a Day that resonates with the Nujoma
Spirit, the Nujoma Smile which is unique and special, the
Nujoma Walk, the Nujoma Swag, the Nujoma Wisdom
and above all the Nujoma Legacy. This is the 12 May
Movement, wherein we can say in the broad day light,
without having to be prescribed to by anybody, who our
Founding Father should be or must be, history has placed
you and ordained you as Namibia's Founding Father.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH COMRADE
Thank you for freedom; Thank you for independence;
Thank you for uniting Namibia and its people; Thank you
for paving the way and laying the foundation of our future.
We salute and pay tribute to H.E. President Hifikepunye
Pohamba for having built on this legacy so that future
Namibian Presidents, including Cde Dr Hage G Geingob,
can find it easier to solidify. Happy Birthday Comrade Founding
President. Thank you very much for the opportunity
afforded to the SWAPO Party Youth League to commemorate
this day for posterity.
Finally, in our view, the legacy of Dr Sam Nujoma transcends
race, tribe or economic status. Today, some say
they are millionaires or billionaires, individually or as businesses,
but they forget that without Dr Sam Nujoma it could
not be possible. Some praise Dr Sam Nujoma during the
day, but when night falls, they join the anti-Nujoma chorus.
They forget that without Dr Sam Nujoma, they could not
be what they are today. Some say they have respect for
Dr Sam Nujoma, but they have chosen not to learn from
any of his attributes.
Comrade Founding President, we speak freely here today
while you are alive. We honour and revere you. It is
the right thing to do. Everything we are in a free and independent
Namibia, we owe it to the good foundation you
have laid in the first formative years of our independence.
Honouring Your Excellency, Comrade Founding President
Nujoma, is our birthright and celebrating your revolutionary
legacy is our generational duty in order to pass it on to
