Acceptance speech by H.E. Hifikepunye Pohamba, President of the Republic of Namibia on his election as President of the SWAPO PARTY

windhoek, 30 November 2007

Comrade President Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma,
Distinguished Comrade - delegates;

I am overwhelmed by the decision of the SWAPO PARTY rank and file to elect me as flag-bearer of our vanguard organization, the SWAPO PARTY.

Allow me, dear Comrades to congratulate Comrade Hage Geingob, Comrade Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana, and Comrade Nangolo Mbumba, on their election as Vice President, Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General of the SWAPO PARTY, respectively. I would also like to congratulate the Comrades elected to the Central Committee and Political Bereau. You all deserve appreciation for the vitality of the contributions to the Party over the years, the vastness of your individual experiences and vision and the vigour of your commitment to national unity

Elections are about choices. It is, therefore, crucial that we respect the democratic right of those who have voted for altenative candidates or those who have been campaigning for a particular candidate. Through exercising our freedom of choice, we have strengthened the democratic culture which the SWAPO PARTY fought for and which we are busy consolidating. We must, therefore, respect teh choices of our Comrades and in the process refrain from personalising and divisive tendencies. Solidarity and the pursuit of common objectives should continue to be the hallmark of the SWAPO PARTY programmes during the next five years.
